Blissfulviolet:  Give a brief
history of Blackthorn and  your
musical backgrounds.
Aina:  The history begins in
Drama school, where we all
met and became friends.
Our band was formed in 2004
by a few girls who were
interested in heavy metal,
witchcraft and theatre.
At the age of 8 I was accepted
to a Choir school and that's
how it all started. A year later I
began playing piano and
mouth harp. At 16, I started taking professional vocal lessons. I am thrilled that
the more I learn, the more I can give to the band I’m so passionate about! At
the moment I’m specializing in classical singing.
Verbena:  I started playing bass when I was 15 as a private study, but didn't
take it seriously until I joined Blackthorn and met my tutor Alexey Kharkov.
Olga:  I began my musical training at Musical school at the age of 8 where I
studied piano technique and musical theory. Since then I’ve played in various
bands and then there was and is Blackthorn.
Elvira:  The guitar has been my main instrument since I was 18. Before that I
studied piano, sol-fa and choir singing in Musical school. One day I took an
electric guitar and plugged it into a distortion box… Life has never been the
same since that moment!
Blissfulviolet:  What influences and inspires Blackthorns lyrics and music?
Aina:  Witchery, nature, the classics, ancient lore, theatre… We also get
inspired of hearing records with some bands we like.
Blissfulviolet:  The band recently released The Prologue of Eschaton demo,
how did that recording process go and what can you tell us about this release?
Aina:  Well, it was a real baptism of fire because of some vile people who put a
spoke in our wheel. The recording process took almost a year, but we finally
did it! It was a good learning curve for us. It feels so great to have the finished
product in my hands, what else can I say?
Blissfulviolet:  Elaborate on what Blackthorn means by “dramatic symphonic
metal.” Describe the bands sound.
Aina:  Everybody knows what symphonic metal is, I won’t tell you something
new about it. A key word in our style is «dramatic» as we try to intertwine metal
sound with the original elements of theatre such as scenery, costumes and
acting for concerts.
The music created by the band, emerges from us all. During the work over the
material we don't wonder whether it is Gothic Metal or maybe Black Metal. Ok,
we are under the influence of Black metal, but all that matters is whether it is
real and true for us, and if it is, it's ok, if not, it is dismissed. Paying attention to
what's fashionable at the moment, does not take place.
Blissfulviolet:  What is
the metal scene like in
Russia?
Aina:  There are a lot of
good bands and there
is pretty up-and-coming
underground scene
which I think is good,
because metal should
not be mainstream.
Metal scene is one of
the stronger ones when
it comes to the number of bands that play here. It's not that great when it
comes to organizing concerts and festivals, unfortunately.
Blissfulviolet:  What would you consider to be on of Blackthorns greatest
moments?
Aina:  You know, every day that we spend together is special and inspiring.
That’s what we call a real coven.
Blissfulviolet:  What does the future hold for Blackthorn? (What are the
bands goals for 2007?)
Aina:  Performing is a major goal for this year… More gigs, more people, more
places. It’s kind of like do or die - we have a chance to do something right now,
or we can sit in the same place and rot.
Blissfulviolet:  Any final words you wish to tell our readers…
Aina:  Watch therefore, for you do not know at which hour The Witchcraft will
come!
