Catholicon - Treatise on the Abyss
2007 - Negativity Records
Review by: Josteinn
What better way to start off this review on Catholicon's new album "Treatise
on the Abyss" by first mentioning that usually albums have a change up
from one song to the next not particularly connected with the last song that
played, but of course at times yes. On this album though it seems that most
of the songs if not all of them fit well together, making the listener want to
not just listen to a few specific songs, but pretty much all or most of the
album. This well designed mix of Black and Death metal is not for a majority
but for a select few opened enough to listen to something much different
than what you normally hear. Catholicon have their own unique and original
style going on having the music sounding very chaotic yet well put together
with the brutal as well as atmospheric guitars and drums going on
accompanied by various high pitched gut wrenching shrieks, bug like sighs,
and low pitched gurgles. They are definitely one of those bands who
doesn't copy everyone else. But work hard to come up with something that
has it's own unique and I must also say after listening to the entire album
several times, disgusting sound.
