When I first heard The Lost Tracks of Danzig, I was left speechless and tranquil with
veneration. This man has been making albums for 30 years now and I admire him for his
energetic DIY attitude and the fact that he straight doesn’t give a fuck, and has always created
the music that HE wants. In his world, there are no boundaries. Maybe this is what draws so
much attention to him and sets him aside from others. Being a Danzig fan for many years now,
I found The Lost Tracks to be a special collection, which I’m sure any Danzig fan will treasure
to their grave.
The latest release is a 2-disc CD that chronologically goes down the Danzig memory lane,
plugging in tracks from each Danzig era that never made the final cut to be released in Danzig’
s self titled release in 1988, all the way to Circle to Snakes, 2004. The final product is an
astonishing, 26 massive tracks and a killer booklet which includes liner notes with Danzig’s own
statement as to why these tracks mysteriously stayed behind. “Whenever I’ve made a new
album, I’ve recorded more songs than were needed for the final CD,” Glen Danzig states.
“The songs that make it onto the final album ‘fit’ or ‘flow’ together as a whole. Consequently,
some tremendous Danzig songs have never been released, not because they weren’t great,
but because they didn’t fit the overall vibe of the particular album, or for other reasons.” It took
Danzig months to sort through all the Lost Tracks. Some songs were still in demo form, while
others had no vocals or needed new guitar or bass tracks. Whatever the case was, Danzig
took it upon himself to enter the studio and complete the unfinished projects. He even handled
all the instrumental recordings himself.
The Lost Tracks of Danzig begins with “Pain like an Animal” and “When Death Had No Name,”
both tracks reminiscent of Danzig’s late Samhain days. These are classic Danzig tracks that
have that early Danzig bluesy vibe to them. Other interesting tracks are “Angel of the Seventh
Dawn,” which interestingly never got included on Danzig II Lucifuge, the controversial “White
Devil Rise,” (Danzig 4p) and “Cold, Cold Rain.” The last 3 remaining tracks on Disc 1 include
songs from the Blackacidevil era; “Come to Silver,” “Deep” and “Warlok.” The acoustic version
to “Come to Silver,” a song written by Danzig for Johnny Cash, makes the entire collection a
must have. This song can do wonders for you and makes you realize that Danzig can truly
write for any genre.
Disc 2 of The Lost Tracks of Danzig begins with the 6:66 Satans Child timeframe. Tracks such
as “Lick the Blood Off My Hands,” “Crawl Across Your Killing Floor” and “I Know Your Lie,”
have that heavy dark Danzig sound that he is notoriously known for. Also included is a Germs
cover, “Caught in My Eye,” in which Danzig slays triumphantly; he states “If you’re not going to
change a song, don’t cover it.” Speaking of cover songs, this collection also includes Danzig’s
version to T. Rex’s “Buick MacKane” and David Bowies “Cat People,” yes David Bowie and
Danzig’s version of this song sounds hauntingly wonderful. The remaining disc highlights the
lost tracks of Danzig’s 7:77—I Luciferi and 2004’s Circle of Snakes. The tracks “Bound by
Blood,” “Malefical,” “Dying Seraph” and “Unspeakable Shango Mix” are definitely tracks to
lookout for.
In closing, Danzig has had an extensive and interesting career. His work has not only been
involved in the music industry, he is also a comic book publisher, martial arts expert,
photographer, film maker, and label owner. The Lost Tracks of Danzig adds the icing to the
cake of his extraordinary career and is truly a great gift to his well loved fans.
