Interview with Emperor Nuctulius By: Marie RavenSoul
When we think of Black Metal, countries such as Norway, Sweden or the United States come to mind; but recently I had the opportunity to interview Emperor Nuctulius from none other than the Syrian Arab Republic. Living in a country where metal is very much condemned, Emperor Nuctilius is making headway with his band Absentation, and with their second album in the making, they are succeeding despite the odds.
Marie RavenSoul: Greetings Emperor Nuctulius, how are you?
Emperor Nuctulius: Hey, well I am pretty fine, thanks.
Marie RavenSoul: Congratulations on the recording of your new album. Can you tell us about it?
Emperor Nuctulius: Thank you. Well, the upcoming album is entitled ‘Claves Inferni,’ and it is a story about a group of satanic priests who are trying to earn the keys to move to the infernal empire. It contains true secrets, incantations and spells.
Marie RavenSoul: How would you describe Absentation’s sound compared to that of other bands?
Emperor Nuctulius: Well, we are pure death metal. That’s it.
Marie RavenSoul: Tell us about the history of
Emperor Nuctulius: Well, the band’s name was titled ‘Epitaph’ at first, and the members included Necrideiphile and me; but it couldn't develop itself because of lack of money, so we split up. I then decided to create the band myself and named it ‘Absentation.’ The revolution had begun. Regarding the signing with ADP records, I can say that the album ‘Mental Battle Resurrection,’ is good to make others pay attention to us.
Marie RavenSoul: ‘Absentation’ is the first metal band from the Syrian Arab Republic that I have heard of. What is the metal scene like there?
Emperor Nuctulius: The metal scene is good here when it comes to the fans and metal heads, but from another point of view, it’s not good at all. There are no sponsors for metal bands, no famous metal festivals, no record labels and no metal magazines. But that’s okay for ‘Absentation,’ as we are looking far away from our home.
Marie RavenSoul: Living in a Muslim country, do you have many issues with the people because of your music?
Emperor Nuctulius: Well, thank you a lot for this question . . . it’s a hard one. Yes, at first there were issues because of the publicity, the power of media against metal music and the people didn’t accept it. But now there are a few people who know about this great art, and respect it. And anyway, they will change with the times.
Marie RavenSoul: What are your influences?
Emperor Nuctulius: Lord Lucifer. There is nothing else.
Marie RavenSoul: You are quite open about your belief in Satanism. Who is Satan to you and how do your beliefs influence what you write?
Emperor Nuctulius: Satan to me is a being . . . not just a dark force. He teaches us freedom and liberates us from hypocrisy. He gives us the power to fight in this life, and gives us the great wisdom to unlock the secrets that people cannot see or feel because they are blind. I am now on a mission to make people open their eyes and that is why ‘Claves Inferni’ contains secrets, spells, and true methods of how to make a pact with the devil. This album is a message for everyone.
Marie RavenSoul: What are some of your hopes and plans for ‘Absentation’?
Emperor Nuctulius: Well, my hope is to become more international where people can benefit from our albums. And after we release ‘Claves Inferni,’ my plan is to try and sign with a major record label that can take us to the next level.
Marie RavenSoul: Other than Absentation, what are some of your interests?
Emperor Nuctulius: Well, I like hanging out with friends, smoking weed :), getting drunk . . . hahaha . . . and then more of that.
Marie RavenSoul: Any last comments?
Emperor Nuctulius: Thank you very much, RavenSoul, for the interview. You are a lovely person. And I thank Beyond the Dark Horizon for the interest. I thank all the fans that support us and believe in us.
