I played this album while driving down the street and as I stopped at an
intersection, children began to cry and piss themselves. What did I do?
What any red blooded American metal head would do, I turned this shit all
the way up, pointed and laughed at them while I sped off leaving a cloud of
evil behind me.
Ecnephias is an interesting name, I assume that’s because it’s Italian, and
so are the majority of the lyrics in this album. Oh goodie, more time to focus
on the music, when you can’t understand anything the lead singer is
saying, but that’s not always a bad thing. The “Cradle of Filth” influence is
very strong in this album, both musically and artistically. A few of the songs
almost seem like incantations such as the first track “Ancanum Mysterium”. I
bet if you went to see these guys in concert, they would probably raise a
demon that will follow you home then steel your money and your girlfriend
to bring back to the band. You sneaky mother fuckers. The rhythms on this
album are darkly blended from a harmonizing gothic sound into the hard
thrashing lashes you slaves have all come to love. “Thank you mistress
may I have another!”
The majority of the tracks are a bit slow paced like track 3 “Veneficia”, track
4 “Between shadows”, and track 6 “Dominium Noctis”(just as examples)
giving the album an almost romantic feel about it, if your idea of romance is
a pint of whiskey and then up stares for hours of drunken unprotected sex
that leaves you walking funny with rope burn on your wrists and ankles.
The synthesizers on this album (And there are A LOT of them) are creepy
and if you close your eyes you can almost see Jason chasing a half naked
college girl through the woods. Overall the entire album is very well put
together, just not very fast. The tracks are heavy, just slow and heavy, kind
of like my Uncle Burns at thanksgiving. Some of the heavier tracks like track
10 “To the Forgotten”, track 2 “Burn Witch Burn” and track 7 “Under the
Sign of Archangel” live up to the death metal name. However, the drums
are probably the fastest thing on this album.
But if you ever needed a sound track to get unbelievably high to, then this
is it. So line up little gothic boys and girls, with your black lipstick and your
eye liner. Smoke until your little broken heart’s delight and pop this in your
stereo covered with “H.I.M” stickers and you’ll come to see that there are
great things to come out of Italy other then the wine.
Open your heart and let out the dark, Mr. VvvvvV Darkling
