If there is any cult band today that can pull off incorporating
psychedelic melodies meshed with antics of doom it’s the UK’s
Electric Wizard.
Tracks such as ‘Satanic Rites of Drugula’ and ‘Black Magic Rituals
& Perversions seem to capture the essence of an oblivious ill-
natured drug induced world with their fuzzy 70’s production style
recording, ‘Witchcult Today.’ The albums lyrics are dark, simple
and to the point and are accompanied by haunting atmospheric
vocals but musically, it’s an entire different story.
The majority of Witchcult Today possesses the same typical
doomish, Southern slunge guitar riffs over and over and with the
album containing only 8 tracks you can imagine how annoying it
can get… Think Black Sabbath on a bad acid trip minus Ozzy
playing the Black Sabbath title track repeatedly and you’ll catch
my drift.
It’s obvious what sound Electric Wizard is going for but enough is
enough. What sucks is that some tracks off this album are
actually great and worth listening to but that repetitiveness just
threw me off. Talk about a bad trip.
