I’m going to go crazy if I hear Jon Schaffer’s voice telling me that he hopes I’
m enjoying this promotional copy of Iced Earth’s ‘Framing Armageddon’
again. This is the first time that I have ever received a promo CD with a
dubbed voiceover. This is obviously to protect the disc from being burned
and distributed. I understand all the positive reasons for this but heck it
makes the review process very difficult. I’m getting into a song and then
bam…that damn voiceover sneaks in…FUCK!
Ok enough of my ranting, let’s get down to business; is Framing
Armageddon a killer album? It definitely is. The first track is an instrumental
tribal like intro called ‘Overture.’ This track alone sets the entire mood for
the rest of the album that unfolds with each song.
The album also has a Middle Eastern vibe to it. An excellent example is the
track ‘Something Wicked Part 2.’ The guitar riffs are amazingly smooth
along with a light almost calypso style drumming, it just rolls over. Schaffer
has really out done himself this time. I was truly impressed while hearing
this album. All the songs and lyrics were perfectly sculptured to accompany
the vocals of Tim the Ripper Owens. This is Owens second album with Iced
Earth and I think this album shows exactly what his vocal talents are
capable of. Nothing is held back or repressed, like metal vocals should be.
My favorite track from Framing Armageddon is ‘The Clouding.’ Other tracks
that I enjoyed were Ten Thousand Strong, Framing Armageddon, Order of
the Rose and The Domino Decree. Overall this is an excellent album and
probably the best I have heard yet from Iced Earth. The only negative thing
I found was that this is a very long album, 70 minutes; so you must have the
time in one sitting to enjoy it completely. Once you get into it, time flies.
This album is also the first of a sequel that is stated to be released in 2008
and the storyline is basically continuing the story from Something Wicked
This Way Comes. Metalheads and Ice Earth fans will truly be pleased.
