Ghost Opera is the 7th studio album from the US power metal band,
Kamelot. The overall album has 12 good quality tracks that would make
any power metal fan happy. Kamelot has definitely broken the barriers that
most power and progressive metal bands stay locked in.
The album opens with an awesome bass and violin intro called ‘Solitaire’
which leads straight into ‘Rule the World,’ a slow yet heavier opener.
The clean stormy vocals of Khan sound reminiscent to those of
Queensryche’s Geoff Tate; this gives Kamelot that rock vibe that stands out
throughout this album. Don’t get me wrong Kamelot is a band that has
created their own sound but some elements of Queensryche are present,
which is not a bad thing at all.
The title track ‘Ghost Opera’ in my opinion is one of the albums strongest
tracks, it possesses some great vocal performances and a haunting like
chorus with musical composing elements that seem endless. A few ballads
and duets follow along with female guest vocalist, Simone Simons. There is
also plenty of amazing power metal riffs by guitarist Thomas Youngblood
and they prevail.
The only thing that this album suffers is the fact that while yes, each song is
well written and unique in its own way, the flow of the songs do not seem to
mesh well from beginning to end. It’s as if this huge surge of energy is
present in the beginning that wants to escalate but then slowly begins to
diminish, leaving each song standing alone. Maybe this is so noticeable
due to the fact that the last three previous Kamelot albums were concept
albums, I don’t know…
‘Ghost Opera’ is an album that is definitely worth checking out though,
something totally different to fuel the veins.
